Welcoming a new dog into your family

Welcoming a puppy or new dog into your family can be a very exciting time. It can also be a bit overwhelming to remember everything your new beloved family member will need so here are a few suggestions...

  • Pet insurance - ensure you get the adequate amount of cover. Online insurance comparisons are a good place to start as they’ll ask the right questions and let you compare different policies
  • Find a local vet as you’ll need to book your dog in for a health check, micro-chipping (a legal requirement), flea and worm treatment, and possibly vaccinations, depending on the age of your dog
  • You’ll need an ID tag for your pet – this is a legal requirement – which must include your name and address. You don't have to include your phone number but it’s a good idea
  • Do a shopping list so you don’t forget anything – you'll need food, food and water bowls, collar / lead / harness, treats, toys, crate / pen / bed
  • You might want to consider finding a local dog trainer to help you master basic commands and loose lead walking
  • Dogs thrive on consistency so work out where your dog’s bed will be, and decide if you’re going to let them on furniture, beds and upstairs – it's much better to lay the ground rules down from the start
